When the time comes to choose a pest control company, be sure that you are wary and that you choose carefully. Choosing poorly in this situation could see your pests back again in as little as week, it could have no affect on them at all or it could even potentially worsen your pest problem! So when deciding on a pest control company there are a few questions that you should ask.
How experienced are you? Some companies specialize in different things; some go for rodents, others for wasps and ants, and others get into more esoteric things. When it doubt, try to find a pest control company that specializes in the kind of vermin you’re seeing.
What organizations do you belong to? Most reputable pest control agencies belong to a local or national organization of some sort. One organization that many excellent pest control companies belong to is the National Pest Management Association. Belonging to this association means that you are dealing with an established business that holds to a specific code of ethics and has met certain qualifications.
How dangerous is this going to be to my children/pets? If there is anything in your home that has a weaker immune system than an adult human, this is something that you need to look in to. If you find that some of the sprays that they are planning to use might be a little risky, ask from some alternatives (gels etc.), or go elsewhere.
Do you have references? Check any references the Pest Company may have – talk to customers they’ve serviced before, particularly customers you know directly. Good testimonials are a good indicator of good service levels.
Can I get that in writing? Pest control usually follows a two page process – the first is an inspection to find out how they’re getting into your home, what they’re after and more. Get any kind of reporting in writing, and get a quote for the service. Be free in cross checking with other services to make sure you’re getting good information and accurate pricing.
Are they pushy? Any pest control service that’s trying a pushy or hard sell is a dead giveaway. Nothing, short of absolutely dire circumstances, should require an immediate decision. For most pest control problems, getting everything settled in a week or even two is more than sufficient. Any pest control company trying to get you to jump quickly on a deal is probably trying to get you to overlook something, or to scare you into paying more.
Do they check out? If something that the pest company does, or doesn’t do, gives you reason to question their integrity, don’t hesitate to contact your local consumer commission. They will be aware of any negative history that the company has and can provide you with details of pertinent local regulatory bodies.
Proper diligence can save you money and help you get over a nasty pest infestation. Ask the above questions before bringing a pest control company into your home, and do your best to ensure that everything is taken care of sanely and soundly.
