You have decided to home school, which means it is now time to select the curriculum! This can be a difficult and extended task, so slow down and pace yourself. Break your tasks down to smaller, more manageable pieces.
Knowing your kids style of learning will be key. In fact, in this process of choosing a curriculum, this is where I would start. By learning style I mean, does your child learn by seeing, are they a hands on learner or does a combination of the two suite them? By understanding their style you are able to narrow down which curriculums you should start with.
Cost is an important factor for many of us. The prices on the curriculums will vary with a wide degree, so knowing your budget up front is key. There will be different offers for different programs, with some of them seeming to have more substance than others. Often the curriculum company’s will send you a sample of their curriculum which really helps you get a feel for the product.
Believe it or not, it is important to understand your personality when selecting a curriculum. If you tend to be a more laid back, relaxed person, a rigid, regimented program might not be suitable for you. Being realistic about what works for your and your family and what does not is important.
There are so many homeschooling groups and associations, yes in your area. Don’t be afraid to talk to other parents and see what they are using. Ask questions, find out what they do and don’t like about current and past programs. Find out if they are using one curriculum in its entirety or pieces from several.
Select the curriculum that will work for not only your personality, but will work for your budget and your child’s learning style too.
