The Steamboat Sabino

Sabino history
The last coal-fired passenger steamboat still in operation, Sabino was built at East Boothbay, Maine, in 1908 for passenger service on the Damariscotta River.

She bore her original name, Tourist, until 1922, when she was put into service on the Kennebec River. Later she was moved to Casco Bay, Maine, where she carried passengers until 1958. After remaining idle for several years, she became privately owned, and then operated as an excursion boat out of Newburyport, Massachusetts, until coming to Mystic Seaport in 1973.

Sabino is now preserved and cared for at Mystic Seaport Museum, where she is a working exhibit and part of the visitors' educational experience.

Daily from May through October, the sound of her steam whistle echoes throughout the Mystic River valley as her decks fill with passengers for an excursion into the past. Hourly sailings each day afford visitors the opportunity for an informative trip along Mystic Seaport's waterfront as well as a firsthand view of the operation of her steam plant. Nightly sailings head downriver to Fishers Island sound.

Parking: Ample free parking is available in Mystic Seaport's South Parking Lot across from the main entrance.
Dress for the Weather: While Sabino's canopy deck and cabin offer good weather protection, it is usually cooler downriver, and a sweater or jacket is advised. Dress aboard the Sabino is always casual.
Food and Drink: Ask about our boxed lunch, dinner and beverage service. Note: Only alcoholic beverates provided by Mystic Seaport may be consumed on board.
Groups: Groups may reserve space in advance for either daytime or evening cruises. Call 203-572-5375.

Daily River Tours
Half-hour trips: Sailings leave on the hour: May 19 through October 9, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm daily
Adult $3.50 plus Mystic Seaport admission
Youth (6-15) $2.50 plus Mystic Seaport admission
Children 5 and under are free

Museum admission not required for Evening Excursions

Approximately 1-1/2 hour excursions down the Mystic River to Fishers Island Sound. Sabino leaves nightly except for occasional evenings when Sabino is chartered. Please call in advance to confirm the schedule since Sabino may be chartered in the evening.
